John Swift is ready to stay with Reading FC this January, leaving Leeds United suffering a potential early blow in the transfer window.
Leeds are low on bodies and are without eight first-team players through injury and suspension heading into this weekend’s clash with Arsenal at Elland Road.
There’s clamour for Marcelo Bielsa to add some depth to the squad at Elland Road, with Swift someone Phil Hay has previously claimed (Athletic Q&A) the Leeds head coach admirers.
However, a move for Swift feels unlikely at this stage.
As per the Reading Chronicle, Swift is not eyeing a departure heading into the January transfer window despite his contract with the Royals running into its last six months.
Instead, it’s claimed a move for the 26-year-old is more likely to come during the summer of 2022.
Swift has scored eight goals and registered nine assists this season for Reading, contributing heavily to keeping Reading’s heads above water after a point deduction for a breach of financial rules.
This is a blow as Swift felt like he was a getable target for Leeds heading into January, as someone that Bielsa rated highly.
After such a long time with Reading, you can imagine Swift wanting to stay and see out the season with the club, before a free transfer the following summer.
Leeds, then, aren’t completely out of the running for Swift as they could land them later in 2022.
However, with Leeds struggling badly with injuries, it does little to help Bielsa pad out a weak squad that’s in danger of slipping into trouble in the Premier League.
