Marcelo Bielsa drops big admission after ‘worst’ moment at Leeds in four years

  • by

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has revealed that the 7-0 defeat against Man City was “the worst performance” of his time at the club.

Leeds were thumped on Tuesday night in their trip to the Etihad as Pep Guardiola’s league leaders put seven past them, thanks to goals from Jack Grealish, Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez, John Stones, Nathan Ake and a brace by Kevin De Bruyne.

It means the Whites have won just twice in ten games and sit on the brink of the relegation zone with 16 points from 17 games this season.

After reflecting on the game for a couple of days, Bielsa has now admitted to Sky Sports that it is the worst result of his four-year reign at Elland Road to date.

“It was the worst performance in the four years.

“At no moment were we able to balance the game. The sensation we gave off was that anything they attempted we couldn’t prevent. We have to look back at the errors we made and look to eradicate them.

“We have to be self-critical and not look beyond ourselves for answers. It’s about not repeating the same mistakes… it’s not good to keep in mind such a negative image of ourselves but at the same time we can’t ignore it. The solutions are within us and we have to bring them to life.”

Bounce back

After such a poor season so far, Leeds need to find a way to bounce back to the form that saw them steal the hearts of neutrals across the country last year.

The fast-flowing, energetic football has disappeared and the attacking instincts the team showed last year seems to have deserted them.

Injuries are certainly a problem at the club currently, but that is part oft he game and they must find a solution as Bielsa says if they are to secure their place in the top flight for next season.

A home game against fourth-placed Arsenal at the weekend awaits and on current form, claiming a victory will be increasingly difficult.

But after the biggest defeat of his entire managerial career, the only way is up for Bielsa and Leeds.
