Phil Hay has cast doubt upon whether Leeds United are looking into signing Blackburn striker Ben Brereton Diaz in the January transfer window.
However, speaking on the latest episode of The Phil Hay Show podcast, The Athletic’s Hay reported that the Chile striker comes with a large price tag and isn’t someone who he’s heard the Whites are keen on.
Hay said: “Brereton Diaz, absolutely nothing to say Leeds are looking at him or have looked at him.
“He was linked with Brighton but then Brighton said, ‘no, not interested’. He was touted for about £20million.
“It’s hard to know, at this stage, what they will go for [in January].”
Stoke’s own Chile international
Brereton Diaz is a player who’s made a lot of headlines lately.
The Stoke-born Chile international, who burst onto the scene with the South American nation back in the summer, has been in superb form this season.
He’s scored three times in his nine caps for Chile since his debut in June, netting a winner against Bolivia in Copa America before two more goals in Chile’s World Cup qualifying campaign against Paraguay and Venezuela.
If Chile qualify for the 2022 World Cup, the Stoke-born ace who’s banging in goals for Blackburn is someone they’ll have to thank.
At Blackburn, Brereton Diaz has scored a whopping 17 goals in 22 Championship appearances this season.
Tony Mowbray’s side are firmly in the race for promotion, sitting fourth in the table as it stands with the striker’s prolific form proving vital.
Blackburn are unlikely to be interested in selling the ex-Nottingham Forest striker in January due to how well he’s performing and how vital he’s going to be in a promotion charge.
Leeds could do with a second-choice striker but will they spend £20million on one? It seems very unlikely.
