Mum worried for son’s life due to ‘useless’ Leeds General Infirmary

A Leeds mum is disgusted at the lack of support her son has had with mental health issues.

Faye Emily, from Leeds, took her son to Leeds General Infirmary after serious worries for her son’s life as he told her he “didn’t want to be here anymore.”

Faye’s son, aged 17, who did not want to be named, has been suffering with mental health problems for 7 years – they claim he has never received the support he needs from professional organisations.

The mum and son duo had begun to loose faith in the support network, they learnt to ‘get by’ and deal with issues between themselves.

Faye said: “My son came to me and said I just want to speak to you from now on, any problems I will come to you.

“We just got by and days passed – he has always struggled but I have always been there.”

Serious worries for her son started around 8 months ago after he lost around 5 stone due to an eating disorder – Faye knew this came hand in hand with mental health.

Her son has also self harmed three times during the coronavirus lockdown.

Faye added: “My son came to me and said I don’t wan’t to be here anymore, I don’t want to be here mum.

“Those words just crushed me.”

The concerned mum instantly phoned the doctor’s and expressed her son needs help now. Faye claims the receptionist said they didn’t have an appointment for two weeks – to which she said her son didn’t have two weeks.

She then waited on hold to the crisis team for almost 1 hour for the line to be hung up.

Faye said: “I need help.

“My son is crying out for help himself now, I’m so upset.

“We ended up going to A&E at the LGI, they were useless we were sat in a waiting room for six hours.

“In that time we saw two nurses who came to do observations and ask a number of questions, after five and a half hours (around 11pm) a mental health nurse came.”

They claim the nurse told them she couldn’t prescribe any antidepressants to help, and that they we’re given a list of “useless” numbers that they had previously tried but had no help from.

With a follow up appointment in two weeks, Faye said: “What if i haven’t got two weeks, his mental health is bad.”

Faye, who hasn’t slept with worry, claimed her son had felt ‘interrogated’ by the nurse, rather than asking about his mental health.

She claimed her son got no support and said to her: “Don’t ever put me through that again, it was the worst torture of my life. I got nothing.”

Faye added: “The nurse didn’t care, she didn’t want to listen to what I had to say and that was the most devastating part.

“I’m trusting these people and they haven’t even got the time for me.

“It was an awful experience.

“No one wants to see their son going through stuff like this.”

Dr Phil Wood, Chief Medical Officer at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “We always aim to provide timely and appropriate care to patients attending our Emergency Departments. We are sorry to hear that the family are unhappy with their experience.

“We would welcome a discussion with them and ask that they contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) team so that we can respond to them directly.”
