‘Blimey’ – Phil Hay and Gary Lineker react to major Watford announcement after 1-0 loss v Leeds

  • by

Watford have sacked head coach Xisco Munoz after they suffered defeat against Leeds United on Saturday.

The Premier League club have confirmed the news on their official website on Sunday. The decision comes after the Hornets suffered a 1-0 defeat against Leeds at Elland Road in the Premier League.

The Spanish boss replaced Vladimir Ivic in December 2020 and did a brilliant job in guiding the club to automatic promotion from the Championship last season.

Watford find themselves 14th in the Premier League table, and they have made a decent start. However, the decision-makers at the club feel otherwise.

“The Board feels recent performances strongly indicate a negative trend at a time when team cohesion should be visibly improving,” read the club statement.

Munoz has lasted at the club for less than 10 months.

Phil Hay of The Athletic has taken to Twitter to share his reaction. He wrote – “Blimey”, before adding – “Watford were very poor yesterday but still, that’s pretty ruthless” – in another tweet.

Gary Lineker has also shared his view after the news broke out. He wrote in tongue-in-cheek humour – “Watford being…well, Watford.”

Reaction to Leeds defeat

Watford picked up seven points from their opening seven league games, including a 3-2 win over Aston Villa in the opening match.

They also won against Norwich City, but four defeats in six league games were deemed unacceptable by the Watford board.

Watford were very poor against the Whites at Elland Road. The Hornets failed to register a single shot on target, and Ben Foster described it as a “battering”.

It seems the defeat at Elland Road didn’t go well with the Watford board, as there were hardly any positives from that game.

But at the other end of the scale, Leeds are now in a positive mood following their first Premier League win of the 2021/22 campaign, a victory that should lift the mounting pressure on the Whites.
