Confirmed: Leeds United and Newcastle United miss out on 22-year-old midfielder

Leeds United are in the hunt for midfielders this month, but one player they won’t be getting is former summer target Jens Cajuste.

It’s not difficult to point to the areas Leeds and Marcelo Bielsa need to strengthen at the moment, but injuries mean there aren’t many positions looking flush with options.

Even with clean bill of health, central midfield has been something of a concern ever since promotion in 2020.

The summer window saw Leeds most notably miss out on the loan race for Conor Gallagher, to then switch their attention to a potential move for Lewis O’Brien.

Neither name nor anyone else was brought in and Leeds were left without viable cover, still sweating on the recovery of Adam Forshaw at that time.

Swedish international Jens Cajuste was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League throughout the summer, with both Leeds and Newcastle United linked with a move for the then-Midtjylland ace.

However, that link is dead in the water now with confirmation that the 21-year-old has sealed a move to the French Ligue 1, with Reims paying EUR10million for his services:

He’s not a player that we were necessarily going to be in for this month, but he’s another viable option falling by the wayside.

Cajuste’s presence in midfield could have been a really good move for us, and at the price being reported here, then we’ve missed out big style.

If we want to look at this sort of deal optimistically, it shows that there are genuinely good signing out there to be done for cheap prices.

I just hope that we can find the right man to improve our team.
