The new season is here and Leeds United’s under-21s will be looking to kick off their Premier League 2 Division 2 campaign with a win this evening against their Derby County counterparts.
Michael Skubala’s side travel to Pride Park with Dan James in their ranks, given the winger will miss the start of the Premier League through the suspension he picked up at the back end of last season.
The likes of Darko Gyabi and Sonny Perkins could also be set for their first competitive run out for United this evening following their respective summer moves to Elland Road from Manchester City and West Ham United.
It’s the first game Leeds’ youth side have played since their relegation from the top flight last season and they’ll be keen to get off to a fast start by picking up a win this evening.
We’ll be reporting live from Pride Park to bring you all the team news and match updates.
There’s the full-time whistle
Leeds pick up a comfortable 5-2 victory on the opening day of the Premier League 2 season. Mateo Joseph was the star of the show, he scored four for the Whites this evening to make a real statement of intent.
James shoots from the outside of the box
The Derby keeper collects with ease, though.
Perkins is coming off
He’s replaced by Amari Miller.
Great stop from Ombang to deny Ibrahim.
Kris Moore nods a free-kick across goal
And Joseph is unmarked in the six-yard box to nod it home beyond the keeper.
Mateo Joseph has four!!!!
Coleman on for Jenkins.
A few minutes earlier McGurk and Allen replaced Gray and Gyabi.
Perkins goes close again
His close range effort is pushed onto the roof of the net by the Derby keeper. Great build-up play from Joseph to find the former West Ham man
Perkins drives into the box
He feeds Gray. The youngster hangs a ball up, the Derby keeper fails to deal with it and Perkins is there to sweep it home.
Perkins gets one!
Aghatise is looking for a third
He finds the space to get a shot off from range but he can only find the stand behind the goal.
Aghatise gets it
He fires a free-kick around the wall and it has enough on it to beat Ombang in the Leeds net.
Aghatise scores again! It’s 3-2
Ibrahim beats Jenkins and Debayo down the line
He charges into the box before putting in on a plate for the advancing Aghatise to finish.
Aghatise equalises for the Rams.
Gyabi has a go
He hits it first time but he can’t find the target.
We’re back underway for the second half here
Can Leeds build on this lead?
Leeds are well on top here. They lead 3-0.
Joseph should have a fourth
Gray puts the ball into the six-yard box but Joseph can’t quite keep his effort down.
Gyabi oozes quality
He spins to beat a man in the middle, steps on this left and engineers the room to get a shot away on the edge of the area. He’s looked very comfortable in the middle of the park.
A shout out to Jeremiah Mullen, too. He’s been called into action a few times but delivered a handful of well timed tackles to save the Whites.
He’s encouraging his side to press high up the field and Derby are struggling to cope with Leeds’ intensity.
Leeds playing some great stuff in attacking areas
They’re shifting the ball really well, finding the openings and the likes of Gray, Perkins, James and Joseph in particular are enjoying themselves.
Joseph send the keeper the wrong way!
Archie Gray’s legs get taken away from him in the area and it’s a clear penalty.
Derby fail to clear a Gray corner
Mullen forces a save from the keeper and Joseph is there to poke home the rebound. He’s been excellent so far
Joseph bags his second for the Whites
Joseph has another go
James’ cross drops for the Spanish forward to hit, but he sees his effort blocked.
That was all about Dan James
The Wales international turns his man, moves the ball out of his feet and plays a perfectly weighted throughball for Joseph to finish.
Leeds take the lead through Mateo Joseph. 1-0!
Nunn has a speculative effort
He spots Ombang off his line and has a go from around 40 yards out, but his effort is just wide of target.
As I’m typing, Gray nods Kris Moore’s cross over the bar.
