‘Dragged off’ – Pundit View: Bielsa unsatisfied with big-money Leeds player

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United.

Marcelo Bielsa was unhappy with Daniel James’ performance for Leeds United against West Ham on Saturday, according to Paul Robinson.

James, 23, became Leeds’ record-signing when he joined from Manchester United in a deal worth up to GBP30million on deadline day. However, in his early days at Elland Road, the Wales international has struggled to shine as many would have expected.

The ex-Swansea winger was named on the left wing to start against West Ham last weekend but at half-time, Bielsa hooked him and substituted in Jack Harrison.

Unless there was an injury – and hasn’t come to light since – Robinson feels as though it was a clear sign Bielsa was unsatisfied with James’ performance in the 2-1 loss to the Hammers.

Speaking to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said: “There have been so many injuries in the last week that it’s really identified the lack of strength in depth they have.

They bought Daniel James in when they really needed cover in the central midfield area and cover for Patrick Bamford.

Daniel James played the first half [against West Ham] but got dragged off at half-time so that tells you Bielsa isn’t overly happy with him. It wasn’t a tactical change, it was a like-for-like swap.

“Harrison came on and James went off. It wasn’t tactical so obviously, Bielsa wasn’t happy with the way he was playing – unless he was injured and we don’t know about it.

Raphinha has to play [against Watford this weekend]. He’s the best player along with Kalvin Phillips.

But if Raphinha’s injured then I think Daniel James plays, Harrison goes onto the right and maybe James on the left.”

James has played four times since joining Leeds from Manchester United on deadline day and is yet to be directly involved in a goal.

While the Welsh ace has shown flashes of what he can do, it would be nice if he doesn’t wait too long to start having a real impact in front of goal.

In other Leeds United news, this player will return to the starting line-up against Watford according to a BT Sport pundit.
