Dutch journalist drops £25.8m+ update on Leeds pursuit of Netherlands international

£25.8million will not be enough for Leeds United to bring PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo to Elland Road according to Sporwereld journalist Rik Elfrink.

FootMercato journalist Sebastien Denis reported on Wednesday 22 June, that Leeds were in hot pursuit of the 23-year-old winger, with the Yorkshire side understood to have “no trouble” paying for the Netherlands international.

However, Dutch journalist Elfrink, who covers PSV closely believes the mooted £25.8million is not enough for the 12-goal attacker.

Elfrink wrote via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday (22 June): “Cody Gakpo on the list at Leeds United.

“Earlier today (Wednesday), he was valued in one piece at 30 million euros which is not enough for PSV, with his contract until mid-2026.

“Gakpo is on vacation so no transfer stress for the time being, unless the amounts increase and the names of clubs become more impressive.”

The Guardian’s Fabrizio Romano also reported via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday 22 June that a deal is “not advanced or close” at present.

Gakpo would be an exciting replacement for Raphinha should he depart Elland Road this summer.

The winger managed 25 goal involvements in the Eredivisie in the 2021/22 campaign and at 23, is exactly the type of player that Leeds need to be targeting should the Brazilian depart the club.

The club hierarchy are certainly not hanging around in regards to their transfer business and displays what Victor Orta is capable of when he has funds to play with.

What will please Leeds United fans is that the club are being proactive in their transfer dealings thus far in the summer window.

There is a realisation that Raphinha will leave the club in the coming weeks, so the decision makers at Elland Road are trying to find a suitable replacement for if and when he departs.

Leeds are currently leaving their Premier League rivals behind when it comes to their early transfer business with the club making it clear they don’t want a repeat of last season’s relegation dog fight.

If their early transfer business is anything to go by, they certainly won’t be anywhere near the bottom of the league.
