‘Greatly exaggerated’ – Leeds chief uses programme notes to deliver big news on future

  • by

Leeds United chief executive Angus Kinnear has used the matchday programme notes to dismiss rumours that he was set to exit the club.

His section was missing from the edition that came out prior to the thrashing at home to Tottenham (26 February), leading to speculation that he might be joining Marcelo Bielsa in leaving Elland Road.

But ahead of the crucial clash with Norwich this afternoon he has returned to the pages to deny that possibility.

He wrote today, via Leeds Live: “I wanted to clarify internet rumours of my imminent demise have been greatly exaggerated.

“Whilst I appreciate that this won’t be welcomed in all quarters, I am pretty certain that Leeds United wasn’t built by people who gave up at the first moment the going got tough.

“Please give Jesse and the team your usual full and unwavering support this afternoon. There is not a game this season where they have needed it more.”

Continuity

In light of the bin fire this season has become, capped off by the departure of the club’s legendary Argentine, some were starting to sense a clear out in the offing.

But Kinnear has joined owner Andrea Radrazzani in reaffirming their commitment to the club’s cause, amid the upheaval of the managerial change.

The Italian took to Twitter this week to defend his position at the helm of United, and the chief executive has now gone public too.

Had either of the pair headed for the exit after making the huge decision to dispense with the services of Bielsa it would have been a crime in many fans’ eyes.

They have to stick around and finish the job of assisting Marsch through the transition.

And there appears to be no indication that they are looking for an escape, whatever the current fortunes at Elland Road.

The team surely must get a win today against bottom club Norwich if they are to stage any sort of revival and maintain their Premier League status for next season.

The work will certainly be a much more attractive proposition for Kinnear and Radrizzani if they do.
