‘Hard one’ – Chris Sutton makes Leeds relegation call, predicts result v Wolves

  • by

Chris Sutton has admitted that he expects Leeds United to be relegated this season after selling Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips this summer.

The Whites have made six summer signings so far in the transfer window, but lost their two best players to Barcelona and Manchester City respectively.

Now BBC pundit Sutton has predicted them to be relegated alongside Fulham and Bournemouth come the end of the 2022/23 season, while telling BBC Sport that he expects a 0-0 draw on the opening day when they face Wolves at Elland Road.

“Along with Fulham and Bournemouth, I’ve got Leeds as going down this season,” he said.

“They only just stayed up last time and then sold their two best players, Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha, this summer.

“Wolves have got some brilliant creative players but they are lacking firepower at the moment without the injured Raul Jimenez, so who is going to get their goals?

“This is a hard one to predict, so I am going to sit on the fence.”

Jesse Marsch did a spectacular job to save Leeds last season after taking over from Marcelo Bielsa and was able to keep them in the Premier League despite their tough situation.

Now he has lost two key players, but he has been able to replenish the squad with six new signings and shaped it in the image that he has for his own side.

They’ve had a pretty good pre-season results and performance wise, but their squad has been hit by injuries once again and they’ll start a bit short in defence.

That could affect the result, but predicting the team for relegation seems a harsh call considering how some other clubs’ transfer windows have gone during this current off-season.

It’s obviously possible, but Marsch did enough last season for the fans to be firmly behind him and have belief and the squad has been bolstered to the point where a relegation battle would be a real surprise.
