We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United.
Paul Robinson would be “absolutely delighted” if Tottenham hired Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa as their boss.
Spurs hired Nuno Espirito Santo in the summer to succeed Jose Mourinho but the ex-Wolves boss has so far struggled in North London.
Barcelona have been linked with Bielsa amid speculation surrounding Ronald Koeman’s future at the Nou Camp [Cuatro] and Robinson is surprised that none of the Premier League’s big clubs have made a move for Bielsa based on the job he’s done at Elland Road.
When asked if Leeds fans should be worried about Barca poaching Bielsa, Robinson told MOT Leeds News: “Yes and if anything, I’m surprised no one has tried before.
“There have been a few big jobs up recently: Chelsea, Manchester United and Spurs. I’m amazed that none of the so-called big six haven’t come in for him already.
“There’s always a worry there because of the job he’s done at Leeds and the ability he has. You can see what he’s been able to achieve with the players he’s been able to achieve it with.
“From a Tottenham point of view, a club I have a great affinity to, I’d be absolutely delighted if he was the Spurs manager. He’d have certainly been my choice ahead of Nuno and a lot of others.
“I can’t believe no one has approach Leeds to try and take him away. It’s always a worry because you can see what he can do.”
Bielsa has only ever agreed to commit himself to Leeds one year at a time, with his current one-year deal, which was signed in the summer, being worth GBP153,000-a-week [The Sun].
Leeds were a mid-table Championship club when Bielsa took charge in 2018 and even though he’s kept faith in a squad similar to the one he inherited three years ago, he’s managed to turn the Yorkshire giants into a club that finished ninth in the Premier League last season.
Tottenham could definitely do worse than hiring Bielsa. In fact, they did when they hired Nuno – a manager who’s ridden off the success of superagent Jorge Mendes in his managerial career.
However, we’re not overly concerned about losing Bielsa mid-season. He may well call it a day at Leeds at some point in the future but we don’t take him to be someone who’ll walk out on us before the campaign is over.
In other Leeds United news, this player will return to the starting line-up against Watford according to a BT Sport pundit.
