Kalvin Phillips is confident that Leeds United can still enjoy another “amazing” season despite making a poor start.
The Whites have made a dreadful start to the season, failing to register a win thus far. They are 18th in the league table with only three points on board.
The second season generally poses difficult challenges, but Phillips is confident that they can turn it around.
Leeds were a breath of fresh air to the Premier League last season and surprised everyone with their relentless energy and smart tactical approaches under Marcelo Bielsa.
Phillips has admitted that it was the main reason why they were so impressive last season.
The 25-year-old has suggested that apart from getting the basics right and what they have been doing, Leeds must come up with different ideas.
“I feel we surprised a lot of teams in how we worked, how fit we were, and that was a major factor last season,’ said Phillips, as quoted by the Metro.
“This time it’s going to be a lot more difficult. Teams know how we work, and not necessarily know how to beat us, but know how to keep us at bay, so we have to come up with a few different ideas.’
“Just to keep on playing the way we are, to win as many games as possible, and work hard for each other. There’s no reason why we can’t have another amazing season if we do that.”
Leeds will face Watford in the Premier League clash on Saturday at Elland Road, and while it should be a tough contest, the home side should aim for all three points.
Phillips is absolutely spot on here. Leeds must come up with fresh ideas. The opposition teams have worked out how to stop Leeds, while the Whites have looked bereft of confidence at times.
The loss of key players in defence is a major concern for Bielsa, while Patrick Bamford is not getting adequate services to convert his chances.
Leeds must get out of their gung-ho approach, and need to adapt themselves to the state of the game. They haven’t been compact at the back, and have failed to see off their opponents despite taking leads.
Once they start winning more games, the flair and confidence will return. Leeds need to be very solid at the back against Watford at home and get the job done, even at the cost of playing ugly.
In other Leeds United news, this player will return to the starting line-up against Watford according to a BT Sport pundit.
