Kalvin Phillips stance revealed as Leeds United look to fend off Manchester United interest

  • by

As interest grows in Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips, reports have now claimed that the midfielder would be keen to sign a new deal at the club.

The Whites might be in a sticky patch of form at the moment but still boast a very talented squad, with plenty of players that have looked the part since promotion to the Premier League.

Marcelo Bielsa is largely to thank for the huge improvement but the way some players, including Kalvin Phillips, have taken to this challenge has been remarkable – but it hasn’t gone unnoticed.

As Phillips came back from England duty following the Euro’s, it was almost inevitable that Leeds were going to be braced for serious interest from elsewhere.

It never came close to materialising in the summer, but now the Daily Star have reported that Manchester United have turned their attention away from Declan Rice, in favour of Phillips who is supposedly valued at around GBP60million.

The club couldn’t afford to lose Phillips in the near future, and especially not for a fee as low as that compared to Rice, who the report places at a value of GBP100million.

However, 90min are now reporting that Phillips is keen on signing a new contract at the club to end this speculation, but only on the condition that his wage is brought in line with high-earners Patrick Bamford and Raphinha at around GBP70,000 per week.

It would make the Yorkshire Pirlo one of the highest earners at the club with a wage of that proportion, and Leeds are ready to open discussions with him.

It’s about time he got discussed for a new deal because he’s the most integral player to our system and losing him would be catastrophic.

On top of that, it’s only fair that he’s one of the top earners here because that puts him in line with how key he is to what we want to do going forward.

If we want to stand any chance of keeping our star players, we not only have to match their ambition in terms of recruitment and performance but also show them how much they are worth.

Phillips will definitely be keen to sign a new deal because this is his club and it would mean more to him getting us further than it would to jump ship at the first sign of interest.
