Leeds United news as Victor Orta provides Erling Haaland transfer stance

Here are this evening’s Leeds United headlines on Wednesday, September 29.

Orta discusses Leeds’ Haaland position

Leeds United director of football Victor Orta has commented on why the club have never been in a position to sign Erling Haaland – but could achieve that one day.

Haaland, who was born in Leeds and whose father used to play for the Whites, had been linked with a move to Elland Road as a teenager.

Leeds reportedly made an offer for the 21-year-old superstar but were unable to compete financially with Red Bull Salzburg, where he first demonstrated his goalscoring abilities before moving to Borussia Dortmund.

Orta believes Leeds were never really in a position to pick him up earlier in his career but hopes one day he could follow in his father’s footsteps.

He said: “He is a Leeds United supporter! We came to the table a little late as far as his situation was concerned. We played in the Championship when he was in full bloom and we obviously could not fight for him, it is quite logical.

“We can be ambitious, but we also have to be realistic. I think that if we meet, it will be because Leeds United have done extremely well. His career is going to be so powerful, so if we ever meet that way, it will be because we at Leeds United have done a lot right.”

Bate passes latest Leeds test

Leeds midfielder Lewis Bate took another step forward in his development on Tuesday evening as he excelled in the Under-21s’ 3-2 EFL Cup victory at Oldham Athletic.

The Whites beat off competition from several other Premier League clubs for his signature in the summer to prise him away from Chelsea.

Bate has impressed since making the move to Elland Road but is yet to be named in one of Marcelo Bielsa’s first-team squads despite the club’s injury problems.

This, though, is par for the course for any Under-23s player looking to force their way into the senior picture as they first have to earn the trust of both the players and the staff.

Klopp transfer advice Phillips must consider

Leeds supporters will be hoping Jurgen Klopp’s transfer advice persuades Kalvin Phillips to remain at the club amid reports linking him with a move away from Elland Road.

Phillips is reportedly the subject of interest from rivals Manchester United following his excellent performances in the last 12 months for both club and country.

Often success for clubs such as Leeds comes at a cost as several of the side’s best players begin to be linked with moves to European powerhouses.

One example on a larger scale than Leeds is Phillipe Coutinho’s move from Liverpool to Barcelona, which encouraged comments from Klopp that Whites fans will be hoping Phillips takes into account.

He said: “Stay here and they will end up building a statue in your honour. Go somewhere else, to Barcelona, to Bayern Munich, to Real Madrid, and you will be just another player. Here you can be something more.”
