Leeds United scouts were listed as in attendance for Barcelona’s UEFA Champions League tie against Benfica.

The Spanish side were heavily beaten at the Estadio do Sport Lisboa Stadium, with Ronald Koeman’s side losing 3-0.

Amongst the spectators were scouts from all across Europe, with Leeds United listed amongst those at the ground.

There was a vast range, with Manchester City, Manchester United, Leeds, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Crystal Palace and Leicester all in attendance from the Premier League.

Across the continent, Bayern Munich, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid were in situ, whilst Blackburn Rovers were perhaps the most surprising name.

Leeds United scouts were in attendance to watch Benfica against Barcelona.

Whilst there is no obvious scouting interest for Leeds, it does spark interest as to where their gazes were placed.

Equally, it should be noted they were only one of 35 different clubs watching on.

Leeds have placed lots of emphasis on recruiting from abroad, with the aim to source undervalued players with a high sell-on value.

Junior Firpo, Robin Koch, Diego Llorente and Rodrigo Moreno have all arrived from overseas since Leeds United’s promotion to the Premier League, with better value often found aboard than in the English leagues.

“I start the season in August. I have a first part of the year I make a quality/quantity view of games in leagues we consider productive,” Director of Football, Victor Orta, said in May 2020 on the club’s recruitment process.

“These are the leagues in Class A, which we consider productive. If there is an asterisk it is because, obviously, in La Liga you don’t watch Real Madrid, Barcelona or Atletico Madrid because it’s not affordable to me.

“Then in this first part of the market we have the period quality and quantity.

“Each month we decide a best XI with age, value, the realistic market situations, performance, the player’s contract situation.

“It is important we make this XI. This is the culture and the knowledge of my scouting department.

“We share a lot of information for a player to be included in this best XI.

“In one moment, in France’s second division, there’s not a good right-back in this month, perhaps the next month there’s three right-backs and no left-backs.”
