Despite the transfer window shutting at the end of August, there are still plenty of rumours circulating around Leeds United.
Here’s the latest round-up:
Whites to smash wage budget for Phillips’ signature
Leeds United are preparing to open talks with midfielder Kalvin Phillips as they look to fend off interest from the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City.
Phillips has been at the Whites his whole career and despite being idolised by the Elland Road crowd for years, he has enjoyed more widespread praise since Leeds’ return to the Premier League and his international career with England began.
In recent weeks the 25-year-old and his future has been the source of speculation.
However, 90min are reporting that the Whites are looking to bring the speculation to an end as they are ready to enter talks with his team over a new deal.
His current deal at Elland Road expires in the summer of 2024 but that was signed long before his recent international stardom.
And the report suggests that he could be in line to break the GBP100,000-a-week barrier if he signs a new deal, making him the club’s highest earner as he would nearly double his current earnings at Elland Road.
Orta issues Haaland advice
Leeds United director of football Victor Orta has told Borussia Dortmund sensation Erling Haaland to join Real Madrid if he has the chance to in the near future.
Haaland, the son of Alf-inge Haaland who played for the Whites in the late 1990s, has become one of the most in-demand strikers in world football since he joined the Bundesliga side Red Bull Salzburg in January 2020 and has gone on to fire 68 goals in 67 games while in Germany.
And Orta believes the Norwegian would be most suited to the Spanish giants.
“In my eyes, he is the world’s best striker if we talk about strikers who play in the role of nine. If I can be allowed to choose, and it’s probably a bit about me being Spanish, then I will see him in Real Madrid,” he told Dagbladet in an interview with journalist Jonas Giaever.
“The truth is that he is a type of striker who has always worked at Real Madrid.
“I obviously work in another league, and of course I support the Premier League, but my supporter’s heart is in La Liga, and I want them to maintain their strength.”
Orta laughed off the suggestion that Haaland could be on his way to Elland Road in the near future.
He said: “I think that if we meet, it will be because Leeds United have done extremely well. His career is going to be so powerful, so if we ever meet that way, it will be because we at Leeds United have done a lot right.”
Robinson urges Bielsa to make move for former defender
Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson has advised the Whites and Marcelo Bielsa to explore the idea of re-signing former defender Gaetano Berardi.
The Italian joined the Yorkshire club in the summer of 2014 from Sampdoria and went on to make over 100 appearances for the club as he experienced promotion to the Premier League in his penultimate season at Elland Road.
Having been released by the club in the summer, the defender is still without a club and Leeds’ former shot-stopped Robinson believes that is something the club take advantage of in order to help ease their defensive struggles.
“Depending on his condition, depending on how fit he is and where he is and what he’s been doing for the last couple of months, he could be an option.
“He’s somebody who knows the club, knows the players and knows the manager.” , Robinson explained during an interview MOT Leeds News.
Leeds are currently without Diego Llorente, Robin Koch and Luke Ayling due to injuries.
