Leeds United’s 26 teenage Premier League debutants as Charlie Cresswell joins elite company

Charlie Cresswell joined an illustrious group of players to have made their Leeds United debut in the Premier League as a teenager on Saturday.

Cresswell started in the Whites’ 2-1 defeat to West Ham United and impressed up against one of the division’s most in-form strikers Michail Antonio.

The 19-year-old became the 26th teenaged player to make their first Leeds appearance in the Premier League era and with that in mind, LeedsLive have compiled a list of each of them.

Charlie Cresswell

After cup starts against Hull City and Fulham, Marcelo Bielsa handed Cresswell his league debut on Saturday following his impressive displays in the Under-23s side.

Crysencio Summerville

Summerville made his Premier League debut from the bench in the recent 1-1 draw at Newcastle United and is now a regular member of Bielsa’s first-team squad.

Scott Carson

Carson was the last teenager to make his Premier League debut at Leeds before the club’s 16-year exodus from the top flight, coming off the bench at 18 in the 3-0 defeat to Middlesbrough.

Aaron Lennon

At just 16 years old Lennon was handed his first Premier League appearance as a substitute in a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, whom he went on to play 365 times for.

Matt Kilgallon

Kilgallon made his Premier League debut for the Whites at 18 from the bench in a 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Elland Road in August 2003.

James Milner

Milner became the youngest Premier League debutant in history when he came on as a sub as a 16-year-old in the 4-3 win at West Ham in 2002.

Jamie McMaster

At 19, McMaster came off the bench at Ewood Park in a 1-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers in September 2002.

Lee Matthews

Midfielder Matthews came off the bench for the Whites in a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace in January 1998 when he was just 19.

Stephen McPhail

McPhail, who made 106 appearances for Leeds, made his Premier League debut as a substitute in a 1-0 defeat to Leicester City in February 1998 at 18.

Jonathan Woodgate

One of Leeds’ most crucial players in the David O’Leary era made his first league start for the club in October 1998 in a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest when he was 18.

Paul Robinson

Goalkeeper Robinson kept a clean sheet on his league debut for the club in a 0-0 draw with Chelsea as a 19-year-old in October 1998.

Alan Smith

Boyhood fan Smith made a goalscoring first league appearance for the club in a 3-1 win at Liverpool when he was just 18 in November 1998.

Alan Maybury

At just 17, Maybury made his Leeds debut as a starter in a 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa in early February of 1996.

Harry Kewell

Kewell was one of three teenaged debutants in a 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough at Elland Road on March 30, 1996, when he was just 17.

Mark Jackson

Current Whites Under-23s boss Jackson was the second debutant in that match when he came on as a substitute at 18.

Jason Blunt

And the last of those three players was Blunt who also came off the bench at 18-years-old against Boro.

Lee Bowyer

Bowyer, who played over 200 times for Leeds during his career, started and scored in the 3-3 draw with Derby County at Pride Park in August 1996 when he was 19.

Wesley Boyle

At just 17, Boyle was handed his league debut from the bench in a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle at Elland Road in September 1996.

Paul Shepherd

Shepherd started his first league match in a heavy 3-0 defeat to Arsenal at Highbury in October 1996 when he was 18.

Andrew Couzens

Midfielder Couzens made his first league appearance for the Whites at 19 from the bench in a 3-0 win over Coventry City in March 1995.

Mark Ford

As a substitute, 19-year-old Ford made his Leeds debut from the bench in an emphatic 5-0 victory at Swindon Town in 1995.

Rob Bowman

At just 17, Bowman was handed his first Leeds appearance as a substitute in a 1-0 defeat to Wimbledon in February 1993.

Jamie Forrester

One of the stars of Leeds’ FA Youth Cup win over Manchester United’s ‘class of 92,’ Forrester made his senior league debut from the bench in a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest in 1993 at 18.

Mark Tinkler

18-year-old Tinkler started his first Leeds appearance in a 2-1 defeat to Sheffield United in early April 1993, going on to play 26 times for the club.

Kevin Sharp

Sharp, who is now Kalvin Phillips’ agent, started the 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace at Elland Road in April 1993 when he was also 18.

Noel Whelan

Striker Whelan made his first Leeds appearance as a starter at Hillsborough in a 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday in May 1993 at 18.
