Former Leeds United full-back Niall Huggins has left Sunderland fans purring after his performance during first league start for the club in Tuesday’s 5-0 win over Cheltenham.
Lee Johnson’s side moved three points clear at the top of League One thanks to the resounding performance for the Black Cats.
However, despite plenty of forward players getting themselves in on the act, it was actually a former Leeds youth team defender who caught the eye of on watching supporters.
Huggins spent eleven years in Leeds’ youth set up before departing further north in a bid of earning more first-team minutes earlier this summer.
And in spite of his youthful age, it’s fair to say he has wasted no time in impressing his new supporters as they took to social media to react to his dominant display during Tuesday evening’s demolition.
Despite marking his first league start with a fantastic performance Huggins was unable to finish the game as he was substituted off with just over ten minutes left on the clock.
During his time at Elland Road, Huggins only managed to make one Premier League appearance for the club and that was handed to him by Marcelo Bielsa in a 4-2 defeat at Arsenal in February.
The youngster had already featured in the League Cup this season for Sunderland and made a cameo appearance in League One earlier in the campaign, but after his display on Tuesday it seems like he could be set for a big role in Johnson’s side push for promotion this season.
