Good evening from Boundary Park, home of the Latics, League Two’s Oldham Athletic.

Leeds United’s under-21 side take on the team currently occupying bottom spot in the Football League this evening.

Papa John’s Trophy action returns for Leeds’ promising youngsters, many of whom were left out of the 4-1 defeat at Tranmere a fortnight ago.

Under-23s head coach Mark Jackson named a starting XI comprised of players aged between 15 and 18 at Prenton Park, but is expected to name a more senior selection tonight.

The junior Whites were downed 4-1 by a vastly experienced Tranmere outfit in this season’s competition opener, but with the additions of some under-23s and Oldham propping up the EFL, this fixture could be a closer contest.

Keep up-to-date with all the Papa John’s Trophy action in our live match blog throughout the evening, as well as reaction from Mark Jackson at full time.

FTKEY EVENT

FT: Oldham Athletic 2-3 Leeds United U21

Leeds United hold on to all three points in the EFL Trophy. Goals from Summerville, Dean and a McGahey OG enough for the victory. Strong performance from the youngsters.

90MINKEY EVENT

GOAL! Oldham 3-2

Davis Keilor-Dunn gets a late consolation. Good strike from the edge of the box.

Three minutes added

Not long for Leeds to hold onto their advantage.

85minJoe Donnohue

Amari next up

Another close one for Leeds United, who come forward through the middle with Allen.

Amari Miller gets onto it just outside the area and thinks, ‘yeah, why not?’

A tad wide of Leutwiler’s left-hand post, but could have easily nestled in the corner.

80MINKEY EVENT

GOOOOOALLLL! Max Dean gets his goal 3-1

Leeds restore their advantage through Max Dean.

Lewis Bate in an advanced position down the left takes his time and cuts it back to Dean.

He shoots and it takes a slight deflection on its way into the net. Perhaps an own-goal, but we’ll give it to Deano.

78minKEY EVENT

GOAL! Oldham 2-1

Dearnley slots past Klaesson from just inside the area. McGahey played him into the penalty area. A touch of offside about that.

71minJoe Donnohue

Rare Oldham chance

Zak Dearnley shoots but drags it wide from just outside the corner of the six-yard box. Had to square it.

Rare for Leeds to look out-of-sorts in their own third this evening.

69minJoe Donnohue

Miller wins a free-kick

Amari down the left once more draws a foul.

McKinstry swings the free-kick to the back post where McGurk asks the question of Leutwiler in the Latics net. Oldham keeper makes a good stop.

Oldham change

ON – Whelan

OFF – Bettache

61minJoe Donnohue

CHANCE!

McGurk again involved as Leeds almost carve out a third.

Charlie Allen fizzes a great through ball between Oldham’s defence and McGurk kills the pass dead as he takes it round Leutwiler.

He overruns it a touch before it’s cleared for a corner.

59minKEY EVENT

GOOOOOALLL! OWN GOAL! 2-0

Leeds United race into a two-goal lead courtesy of some great work down the right from Sean McGurk.

He drives to the byline and cuts it back for Dean in the middle, but it’s an Oldham man who turns it into his own net.

McGahey the captain, is the unfortunate party to have scored that OG.

57minJoe Donnohue

McGurk and McKinstry

The former shoots at goal from the right-hand corner of the box and forces Leutwiler to spill it.

McKinstry is quickest to the ball and has to dribble in a round-about fashion to face towards the Oldham net.

He feeds it back into McGurk who is deemed to have fouled an Oldham player as he attempts to turn the ball in.

56minJoe Donnohue

Attendance

732 in attendance at Boundary Park tonight; 108 away fans.

55minJoe Donnohue

Diarra booked

Diarra goes in hard on Amari Miller near the touchline and receives a yellow card.

Miller fine to carry on, looked a nasty tangling of legs.

48minJoe Donnohue

CHANCE!

Leeds get down the left-hand side with Miller who flashes it across the face.

Much like Sean McGurk in the first-half, Max Dean slides in but can’t get a connection on the ball to divert it goalwards. He was free at the back post.

47minJoe Donnohue

Formation switch

A few changes to the formation at the break after that triple change.

McKinstry for Summerville is a straight swap on the right-wing.

Drameh on for McCarron sees Harvey Sutcliffe switch to left-back, Drameh on the right.

Hjelde replaced at centre-half by Nohan Kenneh.

46minKEY EVENT

Underway again

Second half kicks off.

High level of performance in a low-key fixture

HTKEY EVENT

HT: Oldham Athletic 0-1 Leeds United

Summerville’s spot-kick the difference between the two sides at the break.

Leeds good value for their half-time advantage. Klaesson called into action once or twice.

45minJoe Donnohue

One minute added

The board goes up. One to play.

42minKEY EVENT

GOOOOOOALLLL! SUMMERVILLE!

Leeds go 1-0 up from the spot.

Powerful penalty high into the net from the man who won it. Deserved after a commanding first half from the Dutchman.

41minKEY EVENT

PENALTY LEEDS!

Summerville speeds past Jameson for the fifth or sixth time this evening on the right-hand side and the big Oldham central defender slides in. Foul, says the referee. Summerville to take.

37minJoe Donnohue

All sorts of trouble

Lewis Bate having a game of it in defensive midfield. He beats his man and sprays it out left.

Oldham struggle to deal with the fizzing ball and it falls to the feet of Max Dean.

He tries to slot in Amari Miller but it’s intercepted.

Leeds come down the left again moments later as the ball finds it’s way to Dean once more. He swivels and shoots from 16 yards but it’s blocked.

33minJoe Donnohue

Klaesson saves

Oldham cross from the right and find the head of Vani Da Silva from 12 yards out.

Klaesson makes a superb reaction save to divert the ball over, then claims the resulting corner comfortably.

31minJoe Donnohue

Open goal McGurk

If only he was an inch or two longer!

Summerville gets down the right and beats McGahey all ends up. He squares for a free McGurk in the middle, but he can’t stretch enough to get any meaningful contact on it.

A certain goal if he’d connected properly.

29minJoe Donnohue

McCarron chance

Bursting forward run from Liam McCarron whose shot looks to have found the net but actually trickled behind.

Amari Miller threaded him in down the left-hand side and McCarron continued like a freight train.

27minJoe Donnohue

Creative corner

Oldham try something a bit different from their corner, packing the six-yard box and setting one man free to strike from the penalty spot.

It pinballs around briefly before Kris Moore clears. Some sustained pressure from the hosts but Leeds more than holding their own so far.
