Journalists Phil Hay and Graham Smyth have hit out at The Sun after a story was posted that criticises Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa for not speaking in English in his press conferences.
Writing on The Sun website, Andy Dillon wrote that “when the manager still cannot utter a word of English more than three years after arriving in a flurry of orgasmic gasps from the broadsheet hipsters, things really are looking down.”
Bielsa has never opted to speak English to the media and has always used a translator and the Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Smyth has said why on his personal Twitter account.
He said: “Marcelo Bielsa speaking through a translator still an issue for some, apparently.
“Of course if he did speak English and struggled to properly explain himself, slightly mispronounced a word or slipped up, they’d not mention it. There’d be no gleeful headlines. Oh no.”
The Athletic’s Hay also tweeted on Friday afternoon to say: “I thought his stuff about Phillips yesterday was precisely why it’s better for everyone that he speaks in Spanish.
“Much prefer the detail and nuance via translation over a battle with English.”
Anyone else bored of this yet?
How many more times do we have to read about or hear people saying that Bielsa needs to speak English in his press conferences.
He doesn’t need to do anything he doesn’t want to do.
If he’s comfortable speaking in his native tongue through a translator then that’s fine. No one at his press conferences has an issue with it so why should some random writer for The Sun really be so concerned?
Bielsa has done a wonderful job at Leeds and to try and talk him down by pointing out that he speaks Spanish to the media is just laughable. Is that the best you’ve got?
It’s as though it’s that easy for people to learn new languages and be completely fluent in them. For anyone who’s tried to learn, it’s not easy at all.
We suggest the author of this story on The Sun website learns Spanish instead. It’s clearly that easy. And that way, he can train to become Bielsa’s new translator and find a new job for himself because he’s obviously not clued up enough to be doing the job he has right now.
In other Leeds United news, Jeff Stelling has predicted the Whites’ clash with Watford this weekend.
