Phil Hay has a “feeling” that Leeds United will bring in a new experienced goalkeeper this summer.
The Athletic journalist has widely reported that behind-the-scenes talks have been held over the possibility of that happening, with concerns behind the lack of cover for Illan Meslier.
Hay has shared that he expects it to happen, with Kristoffer Klaesson looking as though he is set to fall down the pecking order slightly at Elland Road.
Speaking on the Phil Hay Show on Thursday [23 June], the Athletic journalist shared what he expects to happen at Elland Road this summer.
“There is just that concern about if Meslier was to get injured, do they have what they need to see them through the period where he’s missing? They had a look at Darren Randolph down at West Ham in January but didn’t do it,” he said.
“That is the kind of keeper that they would look for, somebody with good experience. I have a feeling that they might well do that.”
Everyone will be looking forward to the big-name signings that could still arrive at Elland Road, but there are still some smart deals that could be sanctioned.
Bringing in that experienced option between the sticks could work perfectly on and off the pitch.
If Meslier gets injured, they can play and fill in with no worries, but when the French wonder is fit as he usually is all season, the help he will get in training from someone with years behind them will be critical.
Klaesson is a brilliant young keeper too, but right now, all of our options train usually with no real competition alongside them and that has to change.
This is one that could be concluded quickly with no real coverage due to it not being huge, but it could have that kind of impact on the squad as a whole.
Hay is predicting that it will happen, and who are we to bet against that?
