Phil Hay has given short shrift to a suggestion from a Leeds United fan that Jack Wilshere should be signed to solve the club’s midfield issues.
Leeds have struggled for consistency in the middle so far this season, with the likes of Stuart Dallas, Mateusz Klich and Rodrigo failing to impress on a regular basis in front of Kalvin Phillips.
That has led to a Leeds fan, John, taking to The Athletic’s pre-game discussion board for Saturday’s clash with Watford to suggest ex-Arsenal midfielder Wilshere as a potential signing.
John proposed a ‘pay-as-you-play’ deal for the 29-year-old, who is currently a free agent after leaving Bournemouth in the summer.
“That’s everything [Marcelo] Bielsa is not,” The Athletic’s Leeds correspondent Hay responded.
It’s hard to imagine a player less suited to this Leeds side under Bielsa.
El Loco has forged a formidable side that is based on high-intensity running and stunning fitness levels.
Unfortunately, Wilshere’s bad luck with injuries has seen his fitness levels crumble in recent years.
The 34-cap England international battled back to make 17 appearances for Bournemouth last season, 14 of which came in the Championship, but he did little to show that he is capable of performing in the Premier League again, particularly in this Leeds side.
Leeds may have some issues in midfield at the moment, but Dallas’ form of last season will surely resurface soon, while Rodrigo is a sensational player on his day.
Bielsa will solve their issues soon, and it’s important to keep a cool head amid adversity.
If the club do dip their toe in the market, it certainly won’t be for Wilshere.
