We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...
Paul Robinson is happy to see the back of Kiko Casilla after Leeds United agreed to terminate the goalkeeper’s contract a year before it was due to expire.
Leeds confirmed on their official website on 31 July that Casilla, 35, had left Elland Road by “mutual consent”.
He’d been frozen out of the Leeds first-team and spent last season on loan at Elche in La Liga.
Casilla is yet to find a new club but Leeds could be closing in on a replacement as Spanish newspaper Diario AS reported on Thursday night (4 August) that the Whites are in advanced talks to sign free agent Joel Robles.
Robinson cannot stress enough how important it is for Leeds to sign an experienced back-up for Illan Meslier now that Casilla has finally left Elland Road.
“It was a situation that was never going to be resolved,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.
“It was best for both parties that his contract was terminated. Casilla had a couple of good games but he’ll be remembered for his inconsistency.
“Over the last three seasons, Leeds’ recruitment of goalkeepers – other than Illan Meslier – hasn’t been one that’s pulled up any trees.
“It’s an area they need to look at with Casilla gone now and off the wage bill, it’s an area that can be strengthened.
“I’ve said it many times before but Meslier needs some competition.
“He needs someone with experience with him who’s able to do his job whether he’s injured or out of form.
“It seems to be an area Leeds have been reluctant to add to in the last two or three seasons.”
Robles, 32, is a free agent after his contract at Real Betis expired at the end of last season.
The Spanish goalkeeper has experience of playing in the Premier League for both Everton and Wigan but AS claims that he could be third-choice behind Meslier and Kristoffer Klaesson should he join United this summer.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites want to sign this “phenomenal” former Premier League player who could be keen on a move to Elland Road.
