Sky Sports pundit David Prutton has suggested that Leeds United man Charlie Cresswell should start against Watford today.
Speaking in his column for the Yorkshire Evening Post, Prutton made a strong case for Cresswell to start instead of the returning Diego Llorente or Pascal Struijk.
However, in his press conference on Thursday, Marcelo Bielsa indicated that Cresswell wouldn’t play against the Hornets despite playing to a good standard on his Premier League debut [Ben Dinnery].
Prutton said: “Centre-back Pascal Struijk and Diego Llorente are both back for Leeds, which raises the issue of what happens with Charlie Cresswell after his debut against West Ham.
“That was a very tough game featuring a lot of debatable points, but Charlie made a solid start with regards to what you want from a younger player and how you are looking for him to settle in when injuries are marring the availability of the squad.
“There was nothing you can look back on as a bit of a rick.
“There is now debate over whether Cresswell should still start, even with Llorente and Struijk back available.”
Cresswell deserves to play.
Yes, Leeds lost against West Ham last week, but Cresswell was not overwhelmed by Michail Antonio or any other of the Irons’ attacking players.
In fact, it looked like he had been playing Premier League football for most of his career. It was a very mature and responsible display from the young centre-back [Yorkshire Evening Post].
However, with Struijk and Llorente back, we would be surprised if he didn’t return to the bench.
This would be a shame and arguably undeserved as he was rock solid last week.
However, Llorente and Struijk have more experience, and given the Whites arguably need a win, Cresswell will probably be sacrificed.
Prutton makes some good points, and we will be intrigued to see if Cresswell makes any more Premier League appearances this season.
