Sky Sports share big Leeds transfer news, club ready to make formal approach for Elland Rd ace

Arsenal are set to “formally approach” Leeds United in a bid to sign Raphinha from them this summer, according to Sky Sports News.

The broadcaster reported via their website on Tuesday (21 June) that the 25-year-old isn’t expected to sign a new contract at Elland Road despite being in the final two years of the agreement he penned in 2020.

It is understood that while Barcelona want to sign the Brazil winger, it is Arsenal who are firming up their interest in him and are set to make an official approach.

Get it over and done with

It’s felt like a matter of when and not if Raphinha will be leaving Elland Road this summer.

If you go back a few months, it felt inevitable that he would be joining Barcelona but it seems as though the financial issues at the Nou Camp have stalled their interest.

And while that’s a shame for them – and a shame for Raphinha as he’d no doubt want to go there – it’s opened a door for Arsenal to seriously strengthen their attack.

Leeds will know that Arsenal should be able to spend big on signing the Brazilian star because they’ve paid huge sums in the past for players who haven’t been as tried and tested in the Premier League as him.

Raphinha has played 64 times in two Premier League seasons at Leeds, scoring 17 goals and supplying 11 assists.

He’s been responsible for some memorable moments among Leeds fans and if he goes to join a big club this summer, there won’t be many fans who’ll be angered by the South American’s decision.

But can he do better than Arsenal?

We think he could, definitely.

However, it might be as good as it gets for Raphinha in a transfer market that’s still being hampered by COVID and big clubs spending big money on centre-forwards rather than wide-forwards.
