LeedsLive journalist Beren Cross is unconcerned by suggestions Leeds United are having their January transfer business by Financial Fair Play.
On 11 January, Football Insider reported that Leeds are only able to sign players on loan this month with the Yorkshire club right on the limit of what they can spend in line with FFP.
However, Cross has pointed to financial expert Kieran Maguire’s claim in November that Leeds can spend up to £99million before any worries [Daily Mail].
The LeedsLive reporter also suggests that permanent deals can be masked as loan deals in order to avoid breaking FFP rules.
“I read the report around the FFP issues, but it’s not something I’ve come across myself,” Cross wrote in a Q&A on the LeedsLive website.
“Kieran Maguire, a very well regarded expert in football finances, put some research in November on how much each club had to spend in January and he calculated Leeds had up to £99m to spend before running into FFP issues.
“If there were monetary issues, one of the modern trends with permanent transfers is to now declare a permanent signing, when the small print might say the first year of the deal is technically a loan before becoming permanent in year two of the contract.”
Loans are fine
Let’s face it, our midfield needs to be fixed right now so it doesn’t matter if we have to sign one or two new players on loan deals with the view to them being made permanent.
Leeds have spent a lot of money since winning promotion and haven’t sold any first-team players for a significant fee.
That means that Andrea Radrizzani and the 49ers have been spending and spending and spending without receiving any money back in terms of player trading.
That’s not a bad thing because, at the end of the day, a lot had to be done to get this squad up to a level where it can survive and potentially thrive in the Premier League.
But if the issues do become bad, there are sellable assets in this squad, especially in Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips.
Of course, we don’t want to see them go but have to admit that the summer is going to be massive in regards to Raphinha’s future.
In other Leeds United news, there’s a medical due today for a new transfer at Elland Road.
