‘The Athletic understands’ – Phil Hay shares big update on Leeds-Kalvin Phillips contract talks

  • by

Leeds United are yet to formally discuss wages or the subject of a release clause but Kalvin Phillips has made clear his desire to sign a new Whites contract.

That’s according to Leeds correspondent Phil Hay, writing for The Athletic amid mounting speculation over the 25-year-old’s future at Elland Road.

Manchester United have been credited as having an interest in Phillips but recent reports have suggested that the England international is close to agreeing on new terms to stay at Leeds.

While that appears slightly premature given Hay’s comments, it does appear as if there is progress to be made.

“The Athletic understands that he has indicated to the club that he is keen to negotiate and sign an improved contract,” Hay wrote.

“As yet, Leeds have not formally discussed figures with him or been made aware of Phillips’ feelings towards issues like a release clause but after his run to the final of the European Championship with England, they anticipated that an improved salary would come up for discussion soon. A new deal would almost certainly make him the club’s highest earner.”

Release clause?

The notion of a potential clause in his new contract is an intriguing one.

Of course, there are no suggestions that it is being banded about or that Phillips will demand one, but it may cause controversy if it is included.

Jack Grealish caused great consternation among the Aston Villa faithful this summer after leaving for Manchester City in a GBP100million deal.

He only signed a new deal at Villa last year but there was a release clause inserted that allowed Pep Guardiola’s side to buy his contract out for a mouthwatering sum.

Phillips is in a similar situation that Grealish was in last year, an England international at a similar age, who is at a mid-level Premier League club that is still looking over their shoulder.

Perhaps Phillips’ influence on this Leeds side is not too great compared to his England teammate, given the feats of players like Raphinha and Illan Meslier, but there’s no denying that he is a key component of this Marcelo Bielsa side.

The Whites will be hoping there’s no mention of any release clause when the details are hammered out over a new contract.

n other Leeds United news, a journalist has suggested the Whites may look to offload this player in January if Marcelo Bielsa reduces his minutes.
