View: Big-money Leeds player could save Premier League career in new system

Leeds forward Rodrigo could still salvage his Premier League career if the versatile forward can fit into Jesse Marsch’s new system.

The forward, who played for Celta Vigo and Real Madrid’s youth teams, joined the Whites for a club-record fee in 2020 but has not lived up to the billing so far.

However, after showing glimmers of potential in the Whites’ demolishing of Cagliari, there is still a chance that he can be reintegrated into the team and still deliver on his potential.

Leeds Live writer, Beren Cross said: “There was a glimmer, as we have seen in little pockets across the last two seasons, of Rodrigo’s attacking potency and ingenuity on Sunday (against Cagliari).

“It’s all there for him to make himself the star in this side with Raphinha now on the continent.

“Rodrigo can become the talisman if he can make himself click in this system.”

Can Rodrigo click in the new system?

Rodrigo found the majority of his success in Valencia being deployed through the middle, and using his energy and timing to get onto the end of crosses and through balls.

His close control and hard running style made him a problem for La Liga defenders, and helped him score 59 and goals and provide 41 assists in 220 games at the Mestalla.

During his five years at Valencia, the Brazilian-born Spaniard recorded a goal or assist every 2.2 games, and this impressive goal contribution rate highlights how he when used right, can be a versatile attacking weapon in a fully functioning offensive system.

In Spain, if he was not putting the ball in the back of the net himself, he was ensuring that his teammates were getting chances to do so.

With the likes of Brenden Aaronson and Luis Sinnisterra joining the attacking contingent of Patrick Bamford and Jack Harrison, the new-look Leeds team now boasts runners and playmakers throughout the pitch.

If Rodrigo can connect with his new teammates and rediscover the form that made the club spend £27m on him in 2020, he can without a doubt make himself a star in this Leeds team.
