Jamie Redknapp heaps praise on ‘aggressive’ Leeds United ace following Tottenham outing

Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt made his first Premier League start for the club in the 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The Whites have been forced to call upon a number of young players this season thanks to key players being sidelined through injury and illness.

While Victor Orta’s scouting of the youth market has been exceptional, perhaps the frequency of Marcelo Bielsa’s need to utilise the under-23s is a concern.

Joe Gelhardt’s emergence on to the scene has been something to admire recently and was inevitable regardless of which players Leeds had at their disposal.

With Patrick Bamford still out through injury, the teenager has made a string of Premier League appearances off the bench to a good effect too.

However, as Leeds geared up for a trip to Tottenham, Rodrigo was ruled out of the squad due to a minor injury, allowing Gelhardt to start the game.

He was lively in spite of the 2-1 defeat, registering two shots on target and looking a constant handful for the Spurs defenders.

The striker was someone Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp had a lot of time for during their coverage of the game on Sunday.

He stated:

“He’s like a human wrecking ball. I like him; he’s really exciting. He’s fast; he’s aggressive; he gets on the ball, he takes people on. Once he gets into the box, he loves it; that’s where he can do most of his damage.”

The confidence he has to take the ball and drive at defenders every time he’s in possession is marvellous to watch.

Not only that, but to have the strength to bully experienced senior players out of the way is great too, and he’s such a good asset to have.

I don’t think Bielsa will have been dissatisfied with anything he did during the game and he was a real threat in the final third.

It won’t be long before he’s wheeling away in celebration if he carries on like this.
