15-year-old Archie Gray was part of the travelling Leeds United squad that faced Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.
One thing that is overwhelmingly positive regarding Leeds United at the moment is the strength of the academy.
Their rise in the PL2 ranks has been immense and it’s filtering into Marcelo Bielsa’s senior squad.
The EFL Trophy and under-23s this season has brought about the emergence of 15-year-old technician Archie Gray.
Grandson of Frank Gray and great nephew of Eddie Gray, the player looks to be one of the key talents to keep an eye on.
As injuries continue to plague the senior squad, Gray was included in the travelling squad for the visit to Tottenham on Sunday (0:13):
He wasn’t named on the bench but it just highlights his growing presence in the ranks at Elland Road.
The Athletic’s Phil Hay has shed some light on why he was included in the squad for the Premier League fixture:
“The freshest face in the travelling party was that of Archie Gray, the super-gened 15-year-old who is grandson to Frank, nephew of Eddie and the latest member of the Gray dynasty, and while the schoolboy is setting tongues wagging by training regularly with the first team at Leeds, the club really had reached the stage of asking who had a pair of boots in the car, much as Gray is too young to drive.“
It might not be too long until we see Gray having more of a presence around at least the under-23s.
The fact that he is regularly training in the first team shows how highly he is rated at the club and the future he could have.
There’s no need to rush him into playing at a higher level than he is currently, but he’s one we need to keep an eye on and tie down as soon as possible.
On the other, more pessimistic hand, it does go to show how little depth we have that we’re down to a 15-year-old being included in the travelling party.
